History

!K7 started as a music video production company in 1985*, working with independent artists including Nick Cave, Mudhoney & Einstürzende Neubauten. In 1993 and after several successful albums released under the ‘X-Mix’ brand, the pioneering ‘DJ-Kicks’ mix album series was launched. Over twenty years later, ‘DJ-Kicks’ remains one of the most respected and prestigious DJ mix compilation series worldwide and has featured releases by many of the leading players in original, classic and contemporary electronic music including Carl Craig, Apparat, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Maya Jane Coles and John Talabot. DJ-Kicks reached it’s 50th edition in 2015 celebrating this landmark with a stunning mix from DJ Koze gaining critical acclaim across the globe.

!K7 began releasing artist albums in 1996, and has since been responsible for an array of progressive projects from across the electronic music spectrum. Key acts over the years have included Tosca, Boozoo Bajou, Bomb The Bass and benchmark albums from Matthew Herbert. Recent signings to the label include Berlin’s Brandt Brauer Frick and their classical ‘Ensemble’ side project, Florida’s Hundred Waters, award-winning Danish band When Saints Go Machine and AKASE, the electronic project from Harry ‘Midland’ Agius with vocalist Robbie Redway.

In 2001 !K7 broadened its musical range with the incorporation of leading specialist labels Strut, Gold Dust, Rapster and Ever. With each label focusing on its own niche within the independent musical landscape, the !K7 Label Group has released new music from artists as varied as Pete Rock, Roy Ayers, Mulatu Astatke, Grandmaster Flash, Kid Creole and Lee Hazlewood. In 2013, leading electronic label AUS Recordings joined the !K7 family to help the label develop long term artist projects of the next generation of exciting electronic artists and producers and enjoyed great success with the debut album from leading UK electronic producer Huxley. Strut Records continues to go from strength to strength and picked up the prestigious ‘Best Label’ accolade at Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards in 2015.

The 2000s also saw !K7 introduce the Artist and Label services division to provide a global infrastructure and platform to esteemed independent labels and artists around the world. !K7 currently partners with acclaimed labels including BBE, Crosstown Rebels, Luaka Bop, R&S, Rush Hour, Hypercolour, Glitterbeat, Sonar Kollektiv and more as well as artists such as Tricky, Fat Freddy’s Drop, The Pop Group and Mykki Blanco.
